Non-Fiction Book Reports

Finally the blog issues have been ironed out. I apologize for the lack of posts.

My students have been working so hard the past few weeks to write their non-fiction reports on a "creature" of their choosing. After first discussing the elements of a non-fiction book, students researched using non-fiction guided reading books and iPads.

The finished products are AMAZING! We decided to combine the reports together to practice digital storytelling using Adobe Voice.

Click on the links below to listen and view all of their hard work! Finished reports will be coming home soon!
I am SO proud of them!

Happy Snow Day!

I hope you are staying warm today! I spent my morning browsing Pinterest for some new subtraction strategies for my kiddos. I found this, and although it has nothing to do with subtraction, it has everything to do with how I feel about teaching.

Have a great Tuesday!

All About 3D Shapes!

Our Guided Math Groups this week and last week consisted of 3D Shape activities.

The first group worked on building shapes with our geometry kit.
The second group worked on 3D Shape Bingo. They pulled picture cards of real objects and had to decide which 3D shape it resembled the most.
The third group worked on a scavenger hunt in magazines. They had to find objects that resembled 3D shapes and then they cut the objects out and glued them on their papers.
The fourth group (teacher led-group) built shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows. Below are some photos of the math excitement!

I think it's safe to say these kiddos are 3D Shape Experts! :)

Happy Groundhog Day!

Today was the first time throughout my seven years of teaching when we actually had school on Groundhog Day! All of the other GH days we either had a Snow/Ice Cancellation, or it was the weekend. I finally got to do this cute project this year! YES!!!

On Friday, the students "prepped" their groundhogs by coloring them and cutting them out. During our library time, I used washi tape to tape the groundhog's feet down. The students made predictions as to whether or not Phil would see his shadow.

Phil did indeed see his shadow, so we completed the next step to our project. What makes a shadow? The students discovered it is the sun that gives us a shadow so the sun for our project was represented by chalk. Students chalked up the area around their groundhog and when they were all finished, VOILA! Up popped their groundhog and there appeared the shadow!

They thought it was SO COOL that it was in the perfect outline of their groundhog.

I'm hoping Phil's prediction was incorrect. I'd love Spring to come a little early this year!

100th Day and February 2-6 Classroom Newsletter

Next week is an exciting week in Kindergarten! Friday is our 100th Day of School! We have many activities planned to make this a very memorable day! Last year, Mrs. Bucklew, Mrs. Ewing, and I dressed up as our 100 Year Old Self. This year we plan to do the same. :) We're encouraging our students to do the same for lots of laughs and memories!

We will still have a normal week of school (assuming Mother Nature cooperates). Our 100th Day will still be Friday, even if we get another snow day. The newsletter can be found by clicking HERE.

Happy New Year!

I apologize for the lack of blog posts lately. It's been a very busy couple of months in Kindergarten. We had a lot of Christmas excitement! Throw in there some assessments for Guided Reading, Report Cards, AIMSweb, and more! Somehow I even managed to get the flu TWICE in a month!

Thanks for being patient with me. I will upload the January Calendars as well as the February Calendars in the next blog post.

As always, thank you for your continued support!
